This chapter elaborates on the existing scenario of waste management in India, highlighting the major categories of solid wastes, prime challenges that people encounter, causes of deficient SWM for the handling of solid waste, alternative approaches for treatment and management of waste sustainably, current government’s policies, as well as gaps of existing SWM strategies. Furthermore, it recommends steps for accomplishment of pertinent SWM along with the future alternatives which would help to boost the present management approaches.
